Standing proudly in the playground of Bowen State School is a structure that has captured the imagination of generations — the rocket-ship climbing frame. While its exact date of installation is unknown, it is believed to have been constructed during the 1960s, with the earliest confirmed sighting in a 1985 aerial photograph.
Rocket-ship frames were once a common feature in playgrounds across Australia and around the world, symbolising the excitement of the Space Age and encouraging imaginative play. However, as playground standards evolved, many of these structures were removed or replaced. The Bowen rocket-ship is now considered a rare treasure, with no other known examples remaining in Queensland state school playgrounds.
In 2015, the rocket was proudly restored and celebrated as part of the school’s 150th anniversary. Since then, it has continued to be a beloved and iconic feature of the school grounds.
Today, the rocket is undergoing another round of restoration to ensure its safety and longevity for future generations of students. Contributions toward its preservation are warmly welcomed, and reflect the strong sense of community and pride that continues to lift Bowen State School — ever onwards.
